Pekanbaru administration to build flyovers

The Jakarta Post, Pekanbaru - 04/02/2011

The Pekanbaru municipal administration announced it would build two flyovers at a cost of Rp 170 billion (US$18.9 million) at major intersections in the city to ease traffic congestion.

Pekanbaru Public Works Agency head SF Hariyanto said currently, Rp 40 billion was available from state and regional budgets.

“We expect the central government to be closely involved in the project because the two flyovers are parts of the national road network,” he said Thursday, adding that construction was scheduled to be completed by the end of the year.

Hariyanto said the flyovers were necessary as existing roads in the city were already incapable of accommodating the increasing number of motorists.

He added that the residents did not object to planned construction work. “All that remains to be done before the construction can begin is to remove 150 electricity and telephone poles in the construction area,” he added.
